June 26, 1975 is remembered as a black day for Indian democracy. On this day, 36 years back, the then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, declared a state of national emergency, thereby granting her extraordinary powers to rule by decree; which was promptly followed by launching a massive crackdown on civil liberties and on all political opposition.

An important historical record of this dark period in India's post-independence political history, Anand Patwardhan's "Prisoners of Conscience" documents the State of Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi from June 1975 to March 1977.

During the Emergency the media was muzzled, over 100,000 people were arrested without charge and imprisoned without trial. Cases of custodial torture, beatings and death were a plenty. Repression was also unleashed on defenceles people - workers, peasants and middle class - outside of jails.

But political prisoners existed before the Emergency, and they continue to exist after it was over. Today, the common people of India witness a state of 'undeclared emergency' as the Indian state holds tens of thousands of political prisoners behind bars, often for years without trial, and employing an arsenal of infamous and heavily criticized draconian acts, some of the most repressive of which are the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), the Public Safety Act (PSA) in Jammu and Kashmir, the Chhattisgarh Special Public Security Act (CSPSA), the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), the colonial era Sedition Law, et cetera.

A 40-year long civil war has been raging in the jungles of central and eastern India. It is one of the world's largest armed conflicts but it remains largely ignored outside of India.

Caught in the crossfire of it are the Adivasis, who are believed to be India's earliest inhabitants. A loose collection of tribes, it is estimated that there are about 84 million of these indigenous people, which is about eight per cent of the country's population.

For generations, they have lived off farming and the spoils of the jungle in eastern India, but their way of life is under threat. Their land contains mineral deposits estimated to be worth trillions of dollars. Forests have been cleared and the Indian government has evacuated hundreds of villages to make room for steel plants and mineral refineries.

The risk of losing everything they have ever known has made many Adivasis fertile recruits for India's Maoist rebels or Naxalites, who also call these forests home.

The Maoists' fight with the Indian government began 50 years ago, just after India became independent. A loose collection of anti-government communist groups - that initially fought for land reform - they are said to be India's biggest internal security threat. Over time, their focus has expanded to include more fundamental questions about how India is actually governed.

In their zeal for undermining the Indian government, Maoist fighters have torched construction equipment, bombed government schools and de-railed passenger trains, killing hundreds. In the name of state security, several activists who have supported the Maoists have been jailed and tortured. Innocent people have also been implicated on false charges. These are often intimidation tactics used by the government to discourage people from having any contact with the Maoists.

The uprising by Maoist fighters and its brutal suppression by the Indian government, has claimed more than 10,000 lives since 1980, and displaced 12 million people. Many of the victims are not even associated with either side. They are simply caught in the crossfire. And the violence is escalating as both sides mount offensive after counter-offensive.

Al Jazeera's Imran Garda travelled to the Indian states of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal to get a secret glimpse into the world of the Naxalites and to meet with rebel fighters as well as those victimised by this conflict.

AK47 - The King of Guns - Documentary

The AK-47 is a selective-fire, gas-operated 7.62×39mm assault rifle, first developed in the Soviet Union by Mikhail Kalashnikov. It is officially known as Avtomat Kalashnikova. It is also known as a Kalashnikov, an "AK", or in Russian slang, Kalash.

 Design work on the AK-47 began in the last year of World War II (1945). After the war in 1946, the AK-46 was presented for official military trials. In 1947 the fixed-stock version was introduced into service with select units of the Soviet Army. An early development of the design was the AKS (S—Skladnoy or "folding"), which was equipped with an underfolding metal shoulder stock. In 1949, the AK-47 was officially accepted by the Soviet Armed Forces and used by the majority of the member states of the Warsaw Pact.

The standard AK-47 or AKM fires the 7.62x39mm cartridge with a muzzle velocity of 710 metres per second (2,300 ft/s). Muzzle energy is 2,010 joules (1,480 ft·lbf). Projectile weight is normally 7.8 grams (120 gr). The AK-47 and AKM, with the 7.62×39mm cartridge, have a maximum effective range of around 400 metres (1,300 ft).

From Left to Right : A .303 rifle, An AK-47 and an INSAS rifle.

Maoists unleash publicity war

Propaganda war: A video grab from the documentary released by the Maoists shows rebels training at an obstacle course in Bastar district of Chhattisgarh.

HYDERABAD: The Maoists seem to be adopting the latest technology in their bid to strengthen their armed struggle. They have now launched a publicity blitzkrieg to enlist youth into their fold by circulating a one-hour documentary on their “military successes” in the Bastar district of Chhattisgarh.

VCDs containing the documentary are in circulation in Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and other States. The documentary is primarily intended to encourage youth to join the ranks of the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA), the military wing of the Communist Party of India (Maoist).

The documentary urges viewers to support the cause of the Maoists and join the PLGA in protecting the “rights of the adivasis” in Bastar “being ruthlessly exploited by successive governments.” Intelligence officials are worried about the propaganda war, for which there is neither an answer from the Government nor a counter-strategy from the security forces.

The documentary, a copy of which is available with The Hindu, not only shows the preparations of the PLGA fighters but also live footage of the raid on the Murkinagar police outpost in Bijapur district on April 16, 2006. During the raid, seven policemen and 10 Special Police Officers were killed, and 49 weapons, including a light machine gun and thousands of bullets, were seized by the Maoists. The footage shows the ease with which the PLGA fighters mounted the attack and overran the police camp amid gunfire and the crackle of wireless sets used by them to coordinate the movement of their assault teams. Explosion of hand grenades, rapid fire from an LMG, orders being shouted for advancing towards the camp and firing …, the documentary captures every detail, just like the war movies.The documentary also dwells on the endurance and fitness modules, and weapons and combat training of the PGLA men.

“The documentary would certainly appeal to the youth as it projects an extremely positive image of the Maoist rebels. It seeks to drive home the message that the Maoists are in no way inferior to the security forces,” a top officer said.

The Information Bureau of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) today announced that the recently released video documentary “Bigwas” and two other revolutionary music videos have been posted on YouTube. The documentary and music videos were released recently in conjunction with the celebration of the 38th founding anniversary of the New People's Army (NPA).

“Bigwas” is a feature documentary that exhorts the New People's Army (NPA) to intensify its tactical offensives to deal armed blows against the Arroyo regime as punishment for perpetrating the extrajudicial killings, abduction, torture and harassment of activists and members of progressive organizations and terrorizing their mass constituencies.

CPP spokesperson Gregorio “Ka Roger” Rosal said that “We take the opportunity of posting 'Bigwas' and other forthcoming documentary and music videos on the internet to make information on the New People's Army more widely accessible to the public and thus serve to inspire a greater number of Filipinos in their efforts to resist the Arroyo regime's brutal state terrorism through all forms of struggle.”

Bangalore: For this young software professional, the shift from Madurai in Tamil Nadu to Bangalore was something of a culture shock.

"Someone earning Rs. 25,000 a month is considered well off there, but here we have many young people earning twice or thrice that much and still wanting more," says Alexis Dias.

High spending and high living apart, what affects him more is how indifferent people are to the less privileged, especially children who cannot go to school but have to make living. Hawking things at traffic signals, shining shoes on footpaths, washing plates at eateries, working with small-time mechanics and scooter repairers and generally doing an adult's work but at half the wages. "The good thing is they have not taken to begging or petty crime, but want to earn by honest labour and feed themselves... perhaps even their families," he says.

Putting his ideas into film is what Mr. Dias next did, after months of planning. His friend and cinematographer Rajkamal helped, and between them a six minute and 10 second film was created and is now posted for free viewing on a website. You can see it by visiting www.pukar-dias.com. "I have also shown the video to group of acquaintances and fellow IT professionals so that they can think of doing something to help these children. I felt moved when a friend cut down on his smoking so that he could save money and help one or two such children in need," Mr. Dias says. The title is `Do We Accept The Truth' and it is all about accepting the truth that even in a prosperous city there are those less fortunate.
