Hardcore maoist held

Jamshedpur, Oct. 4 (PTI): Five maoists, including one involved in the infamous Baliba massacre case, were arrested and another injured in an encounter in separate incidents in Jharkhand since last night, police said.

Jai Mashih Charad alias Raghu, who was allegedly involved in the Baliba massacre in 2004, was arrested from Sonua police station area of West Singhbhum district following a tip off.

Raghu, a resident of Old Goilkera area, had joined the naxal group six month before the Baliba incident, which took place on April 7, 2004. Altogether 31 people including 27 CRPF personnel were killed in a landmine blast followed by firing in Baliba under Gua police station in the district.

During interrogation, Raghu admitted that four naxals were also killed in the Baliba encounter.

Meanwhile, a report from Chatra said a maoist ultra was today injured during an encounter in a jungle near Itkhori in Chatra district, Superintendent of Police Subodh Kumar said.

Chandra Yadav, the naxalite, received bullet injury in his thigh during the 90-minute long encounter.

Yadav told interrogators that he is brother of a self-styled sub-zonal commander of CPI(Maoist) Krishna Yadav.

The police recovered a rifle, a pistol, 20 cartridges, uniform, naxal literature and contraceptive packets from the encounter site after the naxalites retreated following the retaliatory firing by the securitymen, he added.

In a raid last night at Nanaikela village in Chatra, the police arrested four maoist rebels and recovered two pistols and twenty cartridges from them.

In another incident, the maoists shot dead one Uday Ram at Nageshwar village in Palamu district, police sources said. Ram had been invovled in some criminal cases.
