Operation Green Hunt and Cobra Propaganda Videos

Several propaganda videos about the COBRA battalions, their training and operations have appeared on-line over the last few weeks. Two of them are posted below.

Embedded with commandos of Operation Green Hunt

It's only recently that the Indian government has started to appreciate the scale and complexity of the Naxal problem. More than Pakistan, its Naxal guerillas who keep the government on the edge these days -- because following on Mao's footsteps, these rebels want to overthrow the Indian government - and they are pretty serious about the task.

Till recently considered as mare security nuisance, (who occasionally indulged in violence) Naxals over the last five years have grown dramatically in numbers and strength-- and so have the killings.

After many security personnel were butchered across the nation -- the government decided to crack the whip and launch 'Operation Green Hunt' as a decisive push against the left wing ultras. 'Inside the Red Bastion' takes a rare peek into how anti -- naxal operations are conducted by the Indian Government in the dense and dangerous forests of Dantewada in Central India. How men, machinery and training is woefully short to tackle the Naxals, who are getting better by the day -- in handling weapons and war strategy.

Headlines Today (in a first for a TV channel) managed to embed itself with a crack team of commandos and venture into the Chhattisgarh forests -- the same area where hundreds of security force personnel have been butchered in the past months (Infact the team itself missed being attacked by a whisker)

The documentary compares the training of security forces and Naxlas, exposes the terrain advantage that the Naxals have and suggests what India can do to win this war within -- a war its fighting against its own peole.

AK47 - The King of Guns - Documentary

The gun has played a critical role in history. An invention which has been praised and denounced... served hero and villain alike.. and carries with it moral responsibility. To understand the gun, is to better understand history.

AK- 47

The AK-47 is a selective-fire, gas-operated 7.62×39mm assault rifle, first developed in the Soviet Union by Mikhail Kalashnikov. It is officially known as Avtomat Kalashnikova. It is also known as a Kalashnikov, an "AK", or in Russian slang, Kalash.

Design work on the AK-47 began in the last year of World War II (1945). After the war in 1946, the AK-46 was presented for official military trials. In 1947 the fixed-stock version was introduced into service with select units of the Soviet Army. An early development of the design was the AKS (S—Skladnoy or "folding"), which was equipped with an underfolding metal shoulder stock. In 1949, the AK-47 was officially accepted by the Soviet Armed Forces and used by the majority of the member states of the Warsaw Pact.

The standard AK-47 or AKM fires the 7.62x39mm cartridge with a muzzle velocity of 710 metres per second (2,300 ft/s). Muzzle energy is 2,010 joules (1,480 ft·lbf). Projectile weight is normally 7.8 grams (120 gr). The AK-47 and AKM, with the 7.62×39mm cartridge, have a maximum effective range of around 400 metres (1,300 ft).

The Maoist's Arsenal

The three principal weapons used by the Maoists in India can be seen in the picture below :

From Left to Right : A .303 rifle, An AK-47 and an INSAS rifle.
  • .303 Lee-Enfield Rifle : The longest-serving military bolt-action rifle still in official service, first introduced in 1895, still being used by the Indian Police Force. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee-Enfield
  • INSAS : INSAS (an abbreviation of Indian Small Arms System) is a family of infantry arms consisting of an assault rifle, a light machine gun and a carbine, it was first introduced in 1998. The Insas Assault Rifle is now the standard infantry weapon of the Indian Armed Forces and is based on the Kalashnikov AK-47 action with modifications.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/INSAS
Other than these 3 types they also have substantial number of locally made weapons know as " Country made guns" shown below.
Locally made Guns
.303's and country made guns constitute the bulk of weapons used by the PLGA.

Rising poverty fuels Maoist movement?

20 crore families live below the poverty line in India. That's just one of the shocking figures in a new report that has left the government red in the face. This comes at a time when India faces its biggest internal threat from the growing Maoist movement... And it begs the question - is the government's denial of growing impoverishment and food scarcity actually feeding the Maoist movement.

Sebastian Rodrigues refutes charges of being a Maoist

A former chief minister and Goa's current leader of the Opposition (BJP's Manohar Parrikar) charged Seby Rodrigues of being a "Naxalite" (Maoist) ... for his involvement in highlighting mining-related issues affecting the people in interior Goa. The charge boomeranged, drawing Seby a lot of sympathy, and much more attention going to the issue of long-neglected damage brought on by mining. Listen to what Seby has to say....

This year the 25th of May, 2008 was the 41st anniversary of great Naxalbari uprising, on this occasion I would like to post a video that I had intended to release last year on the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of the Naxalbari uprising but couldn't because by the time I had completed the video I had stopped posting on this blog.

Anyways I am adding it now for I think it will be a good addition to this archive.

In the Forests of India, a Shadow State Rules

An Associated Press team recently made a rare visit into a region in central India where Mao is alive and Marx is revered, and where an army of leftist guerilllas known as the Naxalites control a shadow state amid dense forests and shattering poverty. AP's team was guided for two days through the forests by a series of intermediaries until reaching a guerrilla camp

Video of Mass Rally of CPI(M-L)Liberation in New Delhi , 23 rd March ,2007

Given below is the video of the Mass Rally of CPI(M-L)Liberation
held in New Delhi on the 23 rd March which is the day that Bhagat
Singh one of the greatest revolutionaries of India was hanged.
The rally was also organised to protest against SEZ's and
anti-people policies of the ruling class combine.

The CPI(M-L)Liberation is a legal overground political party
which has its origin in the original CPI(M-L) of the 1970's.
They are that faction which split into the anti-Lin Biao camp
and gave up armed struggle in the mid 1980's and now only
contest parliamentary elections. They are often labeled as
revisionists by the Armed Maoist groups and in turn they
label the armed maoists as anarchists..

It is important that I mention that this entire rally was
boycotted from start to finish by the corporate controlled
media. Not a single word was written by the any of the so called
national newspapers.. not a single minute of this rally
was broadcast on any of the dozen news channels that telecast
news which could rival any Saas Bahu serial.(Maybe thats why
this rally did not fit into their progamming ?)

This is the response of the media when this was one of the biggest political
rallies held in New Delhi in the last 10 years !

Amit Sengupta
a popular coloumnist who was present at this rally
summed it up beautifully

They came in disciplined, non-violent, totally committed and organised groups led by the CPI-ML (Liberation): from Giridih in Jharkhand and Arwal in Jehanabad, to Singur in Bengal, Sonebhadra in UP, Karbi Anglong in Assam, Mansa in Punjab and interiors of South India. They came in waves of red, the people of India, the invisible majority; there were no traffic jams, no violence, not a moment of metropolitan disruption. This was perhaps the biggest rally in years in the capital and the topical backdrop was the Nandigram massacre.

Next day, not a word was reported in any of the big papers in Delhi. Not one word. As if, this India, this massive protest, does not exist.

But this India exists, in affirmation and hope, in sacrifice and struggle, in dissent and resistance. Because revolutions don’t happen in Lakme fashion shows or in the big bucks of schizophrenic cricket, when the entire media lost it. People learn from history, from mistakes of the past. Revolutions move relentlessly in invisible spirals, of quiet, volcanic, unseen social unrest, in the daily struggles of survival and despair, when the radical turning point is waiting in the next bylane of an unknown village. Like Naxalbari, Nandigram and Kalinganagar.
