Mass killing, rape in Bengal

One journalist before being kidnapped by CPM goons SMSed that more than 500 women have been raped and many of their bodies have been thrown in the river

Kolkatta: A day after the violence in Nandigram, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee is on war path against the CPI-M in West Bengal.

Demanding Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's resignation for "creating unrest" in West Bengal, Mamata on Thursday said that she would continue the agitation against farmland acquisition in the state.

On Wednesday night, Mamata tried visiting Nandigram a few hours after the clashes broke but was stopped by CPI-M activists.

“In Nandigram hospital there are no doctors and no medicines. We saw the injured school children and women. Even the public says there are 22 dead bodies but the authorities have not allowed us to see them. Even family members are not being allowed,” an agitated Mamata said.

Meanwhile, CPI-M supporters are picketing on all the roads towards Nandigram. A large number of security personnel have been deployed in the area to avoid fresh violence.

“There are more than 100 dead bodies just thrown into the river in Nandigram,” Mamata said.

Accusing the state government of being inept in controlling public anger, Mamata lashed out at the authorities for the goings-on in the village.

“They are killing people and mass rape is going on. One journalist before being kidnapped SMSed me that more than 500 women are being raped and their bodies are being thrown in the river. Are we living in Iraq? What kind of democracy is this?” the fiery leader asked.
