Tuesday July 3 2007 11:53 IST

SALEM: The district police have started investigations in the native village of Palanivel, one of the three Naxals, arrested while undergoing weapons training at Murugamailai near Periyakulam in Theni last week.

Palanivel is a native of Chinnanoor near Veeranam in Salem. According to police sources, Palanivel was one among the 24 accused involved in a double murder case at Veeranam in 2003.

He obtained bail and regularly appeared before the court in connection with the case until a few months ago before he disappeared from Veeranam.

He had established contacts with the Maoists groups. The police also inquired the relatives and friends of Palanivel to get more information about other people, who could possibly have links with the Maoists.

COMBING OPERATION: Meanwhile, a police team started their combing operation in the Aramby reserve forest area in Udhagamandalam on Monday for the seven Naxalites, who reportedly escaped from Periyakulam in Theni.

The Special Task Force personnel intensified their search in the Sathyamangalam forest area near Erode.

Additional SP of Nilgiris Munusu led the team in Udhagamandalam
