Nero's Guest - Film Screening at IISC, Bangalore, 3rd March, 5:30 pm

Nero's Guests Official Trailer

ABOUT THE FILM:

Nearly two lakh farmers have committed suicide in India over the last 10 years. But the mainstream media hardly reflects this.Nero´s Guests is a story about India’s agrarian crisis and the growing inequality seen through the work of the Rural Affairs Editor of Hindu newspaper, *P Sainath*. Through sustained coverage of the farm crisis, Sainath and his colleagues created the national agenda, compelling a government in denial to take notice and act. Through his writings and lectures, Sainath makes us confront the India we don’t want to see, and provokes us to think about who ‘Nero’s Guests’ are in today’s world.

ABOUT P SAINATH:

P Sainath, Rural Affairs Editor of The Hindu, is the 2007 winner of the Ramon Magsaysay Award, Asia’s most prestigious prize (and often referred to as the ‘Asian Nobel’), for Journalism Literature and Creative Communications Arts. Winner of over 35 global and national awards, his current work the agrarian crisis has produced the largest journalistic body of work ever on the Indian countryside in terms of the problems faced by farming communities. It is also a body of work that goes far beyond the realm of journalism, capturing issues and complexities that academia and policy makers have failed to.

  2. well I am not agree with this documentary, this is not full true. and I can say that because I have seen these poor people from very close. the real problem of these people is narrow minded thought, and rejecting technology and yeah I also want to add these people have refused to do competition. they are poor because they don't believe in them self. they simply don't want to compete and win. I can say these rude words because I know them very well.

I also don't think the Maoist is the right way to make india better. Just think about the countries like north korea or other communist country, are the people of these countries living well? even in chaina the difference between poor & reach is growing day by day.

I know this post might not appear in this blog, or it will be deleted. but remember one thing that maoist idea can't do anything better for the people of india.

wow sudipta. well said. The farmers are narrow minded & fools. But where stands MBA & MCA degree holder, they are also in condition of about to suicide. The present system says only IIT, IIM degree holders are compitant & no any other. so why other youth and farmers, peasants and others obey the present rule.

Hmm, interesting comment. I will answer that later, but let me explain what I saw in my life when I used to live near Lalgarh.
When I used to a kid I always heard from the other people of that area that how computer is bad, how bad the technology is, how bad technology is for mankind. Now it feels funny but even at that time, we have to write essay in school about “why technology is bad for mankind” for good marks. And once I also get punishment from one teacher for arguing about this subject. And now that computer is creating the employment in this country.
At that time almost all the teachers were communist (member of CPM party). And they used to lecture us all day how we all are same and we all must have same economical status in society.
As I grow up I noticed that few hard working students, who are intelligent, competitive, determined and with strong will, worked hard and get settled in their life. Though their family was poor but they made their own destiny with their own hand. Few become doctor, engineer, and teacher. And one of my friends who ditch school in eight grades (his father was riksahwala) settled in a good business. In other hand there were few very reach student who were very lazy is living a terrible life. Few of them are doing so bad that now they even destroyed their dad’s business.
So my point is if you work hard you can make your future.
Now I was wondering where it says that “The present system says only IIT, IIM degree holders are competent & no any other”. It never says in any book that IIT, IIM degree holders are competent & no any other. Do you know about “Dhirubhai ambani”? He never was a degree holder. But he was intelligent, competitive, determined. I can give you thousands of examples where people made great future without any degree.
And finally those people who commit suicide you can’t call them competent. It doesn’t matter they are rich or poor, student or farmer.
