Man who 'killed' naxal Varghese is no more
Punalur: P Ramachandran Nair, the retired police constable, who confessed that he had, under threat to his own life from higher police officials, shot naxelite leader Varghese dead at 6.55 pm on February 18, 1970, passed away on Thursday night. He was under treatment after suffering from asthma for a long time.
Police had then described Varghese's death as an encounter death at the time of the incident - when Varghese was apprehended by the police, he fired a shot at the Superintendent of Police who in self-defence fired back resulting in the death of Varghese.
According to the former constable, the order to execute the Naxalite leader was issued by the then deputy superintendent of police K Lekshmana.
However, the policeman was pulling the trigger to lit the fuse of controversies 28 years later in 1998, that once again revolved around the alleged repression and human rights violations perpetrated by the State's political leaders, especially K.Karunakaran and the Rajan case as his political rivals alleged.

immediately after the actions lead by varghese one of my friend indicated that he will be killed by the police without any proof which exactly happened
ReplyDeleteThis is not how Varghese was killed.
ReplyDeleteAs part of the torture one of his eyes was taken out using a bayonet attached to rifles in those days. Bayonet is like a dagger fixed to the barrel of the gun.
The picture of the dead body released by police had one eye closed and one eye open. The note below the picture in Manaorama paper said that Varghese was shot while he was aiming his gun at the police with one eye closed, and that is why one eye is closed in the photo. Anyone who has the old newspaper can check and confirm.
Ghosts of Charu's supporters are going to eat every minute of your bloody ruling class lives and cops. It is right to rebel till the end and, torturers ought to be given back to the families of fallen comrades by the people's courts!
ReplyDeleteIf i say the old HC Ramachandran nair was insane most of the people heve to think about it, because no one ever tried to check the sanity of HC ramachandran nair, while he was making statements to police and court, relating the trial of IG.
